Jolie in Alexander; Taylor as Cleopatra
Angelina Jolie has taken on the lead role of Cleopatra in a reboot of the Elizabeth Taylor classic. Her love at the time, Richard Burton, played her lover in the film, Mark Anthony. Brad, please!? They are the Liz & Dick of our time, after all. This would seal the deal! The script is already written (we know the story) and she’s hinted that the gravity of the role could make it her last.
“It’s one of those [roles] you feel like maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it. That’s where you finish, in a great way. You kind of go, ‘What could you do beyond that one?’ She went on. “It’s complicated to get this one right. She’s complicated…I imagine that the preparation for it is going to be big.”
She isn’t the first actor to tease the press with early retirement, but she’s probably not bluffing and she would actually be missed. If this isn’t her last role, it might be close. She wants to fulfill the oldest actor cliché in the book; she really wants to direct, something the boys get to do a lot more than the girls. She already has, to some acclaim – and she will again.
