Fashion Flashback 2: Possibly THE Most Stylish Woman On TV – Ever

My old pal, Mary Kaye Schilling, wrote last month about Kitty Carlisle Hart in Town & Country. The singer, actress, and arts advocate, who was married to playwright Moss Hart, died in 2007 at the age of 96. That gal NEVER left the house without looking like a million bucks. From 1956 to 1978, Bud Collyer, host of the TV game show To Tell the Truth introduced Kitty like this. This cavalcade of clothes is like a mini history of fashion, throughout those decades, but as Mary Kaye points out, unlike modern day red carpet hounds, she NEVER used a stylist – these were her OWN clothes. Just watch. BTW, RuPaul, there are few looks here you might want to get some screen grabs of… (Thanks, Vicki; via Town & Country)

Fashion Flashback 1: Charles James at The Met

The Met Ball red carpet Nancy James Michelle Obama John Rawlings fashion Diana Vreeland Charles James Cecil Beaton Babe Paley Anna Wintour Costume Center anna wintour

Cecil Beaton for Vogue, 1948

So, you know Monday is The Met Ball. The First Lady, Michelle Obama will cut the ribbon on the newly renovated Anna Wintour Costume Center, although she won’t be attending the Ball Monday night. (This name of the center is somewhat of a scandal on its own as many thought it should named after Diana Vreeland, the woman who put the Costume Institute on the map – but it’s a done deal now. Sorry, DV but Anna raised $125 million bucks – and money talks.)

The latest exhibit, Charles James: Beyond Fashion, which opens next week, will explore the couturier’s sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continues to influence designers today. After designing in his native London, and then Paris, James arrived in New York City in 1940. Though he had no formal training, he is now regarded as one of the greatest designers in America to have worked in the tradition of the Haute Couture. His fascination with complex cut and seaming led to the creation of key design elements that he updated throughout his career: wrap-over trousers, figure-eight skirts, body-hugging sheaths, ribbon capes and dresses, spiral-cut garments, and poufs. All this finery will be on display. Take a look at some it here. Today, this is still really the red carpet standard that everyone craves. It’s sometimes called Hollywood Glamour but it is just pure GLAMOUR. The men attending The Met Ball on Monday night will be a bit challenged to keep up as they are required to wear white tie and tails. Look for pictures on social media #CharlesJames.

Uniqlo LA II Keith Haring Brian Boulos Barbara Gladstone Art AIDS

Keith Haring, Untitled, 1986

There’s a Keith Haring show opening tonight. They used to be quite the event, back in the day. Keith would usually print thousands of posters to give away free and sign (I have few signed ones, still in my flat files.) This exhibit at Gladstone Gallery includes canvases and tarps painted in the 1980s. Keith created many works that initially appear to be celebratory and playful, but he was a politically active and socially conscious, interested in being involved in the cultural climate that lived in. His works explore themes of sexuality, technology, AIDS, and capitalist greed. This yellow, red and black piece shown here, shows his classic, simply outlined human figures; but unlike many of his other works in which the figures are dancing and bursting with energy, here they lie piled atop one another, with symbolic black x’s over their faces, a haunting representation of the toll taken by the AIDS virus which eventually killed him.

He’s never been more widely recognized or “collaborated” with. Take these pieces on Paddle 8 done by his frequent collaborator LA II with Brian Boulos or the shirts, bags, boxers and scarves by Uniqlo, which you can get online. If you’re in New York, the opening is at Barbara Gladstone, 515 W 24th St, from 5-7 PM and runs through June 14.

Joel McHale hosted and POTUS got in some good zingers; poking fun at the GOP, news outlets, himself and own administration at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night. Here’s his top 5:

5. “MSNBC’s here, they’re a little overwhelmed. They’ve never seen an audience this BIG before.”
4. “If you want to get paid while not working, you should have to run for Congress just like everyone else.”
3. “Gridlock [in D.C.] has gotten so bad, you’ve got to wonder, what did we do to piss off Chris Christie so bad?”
2. “I haven’t seen somebody pull a 180 that fast [as an Olympic snowboarder] since Rand Paul dis-invited that Nevada rancher [Cliven Bundy] from this dinner.”
1. “These days, House Republicans are actually giving John Boehner a harder time than they’re giving me, which means orange really is the new black.”

Zing! Watch the whole thing.

Awkward Avril: $400 Fan Meet & Greet – No Touching!

Michelle Obama Meet & Greet awkward encounters Avril Lavigne Most recording artists, musicians – whatever you want to call them, have a “VIP Meet and Greet”, that gives fans a few minutes, prior to the concert with said artist. For $400, you want a record of the encounter, right? Well, with Avril Lavigne you get one – an awkward one, as these photos attest. Security, apparently told these folks, there was no touching the star and the weirdness is palpable. Really? You don’t get a hug or even an arm around the shoulder?

Speaking from personal experience, I’m here to tell you that if/ when you meet Michelle Obama, you are VERY likely to get a hug. In February, I was lucky enough to be at the New Museum for an event with the First Lady and twenty eighth graders. After speaking a boy the benefits of drinking water, etc, every one of those kids, and their teachers, got a hug from her. When meeting her for the first time, myself, I leaned in to shake her hand and, as you can see at the end of this video clip, I got pulled in for a nice hug. Maybe she was just in a huggy mood that day, with all those kids, but she does project the feeling that she’d hug you, right? Maybe Avril’s shy, but she’s not an awkward teen anymore. So “man-up” and take note, hon. It’s a cliché but hugs ARE free, so if your fans are paying that kind of dough, I think you should kiss them on the mouth. But no tongue, please.

VICE has an A-Z Guide to Pizza that’s worth your time.

Salon, God bless ‘em, goes undercover to discover why having sex in a reststop men’s room is so much fun.

Slate explores the science behind Transcendence. So… when will be able to upload Johnny Depp’s brain? And, more importantly, why would we want to?

After James Franco called the New York Times theater critic “a little bitch” on Instagram for giving his performance in Of Mice & Men a bad review, The Guardian says we have now entered into a new age of counter-criticism.

The Daily Beast tallies up every woman Don Draper has ever slept with.

And Vulture asks a serial killer expert to analyze every episode of Mad Men for links to the Manson Family murders (because OBVIOUSLY Megan is about to be killed by them).

Alice Hoffman has some… um… out-of-the-box suggestions for getting you started on that novel you’ve been meaning to write.

Newsweek reports on how Laverne Cox transformed the audience at the GLAAD Awards.

New York magazine announces that we have reached “Peak Beard Saturation” and has the scientific proof the trend is is OVER.

A lengthy piece on Cartoon Network’s iconic Adventure Time declares it is a “deeply serious work of moral philosophy, a rip-roaring comic masterpiece, and a meditation on gender politics and love in the modern world. It is rich with moments of tenderness and confusion, and real terror and grief even; moments sometimes more resonant and elementally powerful than you experience in a good novel.” And I thought it was just fun to watch in a k-hole.

The New York Times obituary for Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and over at Slate: What he meant to the people of Colombia (and why we can never TRULY get his novels).

Also in the Times: The complicated life of one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s heroin connections.

Salon exposes Leonardo DiCaprio’s DARKEST SECRET: He’s actually deeply uncool.

Oh My Gah. Going braless is SO NORMCORE.

And finally, a rather salacious article in The Daily Beast goes inside Bryan Singer’s infamous twink pool parties. I saved it for last because you’re going to need a Silkwood shower after reading it.

Daily Mail claims that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 was a political fanatic. This comes as police are investigating the possibility that he hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest.

OK, so we all think Flight 727 was hijacked, but just in case that gets disproven, New York magazine has other theories ranging from mechanical failure to alien abduction.

Happy Birthday, Keith Haring! He Would Have Been 56 Today

Tseng Kwong Chi The Legacy Project The Keith Haring Foundation SVA Madonna Keith Haring Danceteria In June of 1980, I moved to New York. I met Keith Haring that summer at Danceteria, where he was a busboy at the time. He had just done a mural above the staircase there and in the coming months was beginning to make a name for himself because of his subway drawings, which seemed too be everywhere. He was nerdy, a bit awkward, funny, intense, and kinda sexy. We became friendly and had MANY friends in common. I took the Polariods below (which have never been seen before) at his birthday “Party Of Life” in ’84, where Madonna performed Like A Virgin on a bed. (Yikes! Thirty years ago!) After his passing, Madonna dedicated the first night of her Blond Ambition Tour as a benefit concert in Keith’s memory, and donated all proceeds from ticket sales to AIDS charities. Keith would have been 56 today. He is still missed, but his good works continue on through The Keith Haring Foundation that, in addition to representing his work, supports educational opportunities for underprivileged children and finances AIDS research and patient care.

Keith was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on May 4, 1958 and was raised in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He became interested in drawing and art at an early age and he later studied commercial art from 1976 to 1978 at Pittsburgh’s Ivy School of Professional Art but lost interest in it:

“I’d been convinced to go [to art school] by my parents and guidance counselor. They said that if I was going to seriously pursue being an artist, I should have some commercial-art background. I went to a commercial-art school, where I quickly realized that I didn’t want to be an illustrator or a graphic designer. The people I met who were doing it seemed really unhappy; they said that they were only doing it for a job while they did their own art on the side, but in reality that was never the case–their own art was lost. I quit the school.”

After this, he moved to New York in ’78 and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (and met fellow students Kenny Scharf and Rodney Alan Greenblat) and majored in painting. He achieved his first major public attention, as I mentioned, with his subway drawings. These were documented by his photographer photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. Around this time, “The Radiant Baby” was born and as they say, the rest is history. The graphic is of his plaque at The Legacy Project.

Frieze Art Fair, Randall’s Island, New York

Yes, yet another artist collaboration. I’ve done them myself and I’m getting a bit bored of the idea – but this one is affordable and looks cool. The Gap (yes, THAT Gap) and Visionaire magazine are reuniting again, after last December’s Art Basel Miami Beach, for Frieze Art Fair which opens on Randall’s Island this week. The collection includes Richard Phillips, Yoko Ono, Marc Quinn and more — and will be available May 9 at a few Gap locations and on Randall’s Island, as well. Which is your fave? The gold Yoko is very nice but I think the Marc Quinn would look equally good at the pool or peeking out from a blazer. And to be honest the paint by number Alex Katz is slightly derivative of SOMEONE but the guy is 86, so I’ll cut him some slack and assume the idea was probably suggested by an assistant.
