Yes, it’s been 20 years since RuPaul MC’d the Drag Queen of the Year contest in the opening scene of the classic, To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. Vida (Patrick Swayze), Chi Chi (John Leguizamo) and Noxeema (Wesley Snipes) are the trio at the center of this kinda-corny, kinda-outdated but still funny and touching adventure about three drag queens on the cross-country road trip. On their way to Hollywood for the Drag Queen of America contest (shades of RPDR!) the girls get stranded in the tiny town of Snydersville and they set out to repair broken hearts, broken dreams and the broken nails of the unsuspecting townsfolk during one wild weekend. It has it’s problems with stereotyping – and clichés abound– but the three leads are pretty great, as is Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner and the rest of the fine supporting cast. (Watch for cameos Joey Arias, Miss CoCo Peru and more in the contest scenes…) I just re-watched it yesterday and it’s fun –and for the children who’ve never seen it, you’d better watch to know your Drag Herstory!
