In Memory of Nelson Sullivan…25 Years Later
It’s been 25 years since Nelson Sullivan passed away. In memory of Nelson, click over and watch some of his iconic videos. Rest in peace Nelson.
When New York City’s dilapidated downtown was starting to wake up and smell the cocaine, the South Carolina expatriate Nelson Sullivan had already quit his music-store job, moved into an old building in the Meatpacking District (where all manner of meat was still being packed), and begun videotaping 24/7 what would become the city’s most decadent decade: the 1980s. With his old-school camcorder strapped to his shoulder like a third arm, Nelson manouvered through streets and past doormen, getting up-close and personal with the big and small stars of the new scene, all the while providing a continuous chatty narration in his southern drawl, y’all. He was always welcome, whether it was backstage with the Pyramid drag queens, at Limelight with the clubkids, or visiting Sylvia Miles in her kitchen. Everyone felt comfortable talking to him and his camera. Over the course of his short life (after making an eerily prophetic tape sitting by the Hudson River on July 3, 1989, he died suddenly of a heart attack at age 41 the next day), he had amassed nearly 1,500 hours of tape, the footage including the likes of everyone from Andy Warhol to Keith Haring to John Sex to Cookie Mueller to Deee-Lite to a not-yet-famous RuPaul (always a delight!) to drag queen Christina and other denizens of the Chelsea Hotel to anyone who was anyone, which in those days was everyone. -Stephan Saban

Flashback 1968: The Making of Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo & Juliet
Why, it’s almost too much beauty to take in all at once: The heartstopping loveliness of Olivia Hussey! The impossible prettiness Leonard Whiting! The romantic countryside at director Franco Zeffirelli’s Italian villa! It all makes for a spectacular behind-the-scenes feature on the making of the 1968 classic Romeo & Juliet. There are some groovy ’60s fashions on display here (Franco’s caftan is fantastic), and a really great scene with Leonard in a white Speedo at the pool. Now, remember: Olivia and Leonard were really dating at the time, although he was tragically more in love with her, and she had eyes for Zeffirelli. What a hussy. It was all magnificent soap opera, both in front of and behind the scenes.
Also check out this adorable interview with stars Olivia and Leonard. Sigh. They don’t make teen stars like THOSE TWO anymore, do they? And he looks like the love-child of Jared Leto and Zac Efron. Just an UNBELIEVABLE beauty.

Joan Rivers’ Dog Saved Her Life
Endlessly fascinating Joan Rivers opens up in a candid new interview explaining that after her husband’s suicide, she had a gun in her lap and was close to ending it all before her dog intervened:

…and so it does! At 81 years, Joan is a remarkable survivor and her work ethic, irreverence and tenacity are all wildly impressive. I am sooooo team Joan that I could become a Joan Ranger at any moment. Check out Joan’s latest clip on Fox News below (calm down) which is probably about as muted and reserved as she will ever get.
Joan’s new book “Diary of a Mad Diva” is dedicated to Kanye West “because he’ll never fucking read it.” Kanye boastfully outed himself to the public as a non-reader of books, and so she is probably right. Maybe that’s for the best. Joan has a talent for pissing off a lot of people, and maybe sometimes she goes a bit too far – but if you don’t piss anyone off, you don’t really move anyone, either!

Red, White, and Booze: The Perfect 4th of July Cocktails!
Spectacular 4th of July cocktail suggestions courtesy of RollingOut.com. People will be talking about your barbecue for YEARS to come with these patriotic libations! Check out the recipes after the jump!
THE 4th Of July Cocktail
1 ounce watermelon schnapps
1 big splash cranberry juice
1 very thin slice jalapeno or serrano pepper
1 slice lemon
1 slice lime
1 1/2 ounces tequila
1/4 ounce blue curacao
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Watermelon wedge, for garnish (optional)
Mix the schnapps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass. Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Garnish with watermelon.
The Fourth Martini
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce triple sec
1/2 ounce blue curacao
1/2 ounce prepared sweet-and-sour mix
1 dash grenadine
Mix all ingredients except grenadine in shaker and chill then pour into a martini glass. Add grenadine and it will sink to bottom.
The Yankee Doodle
1 part UV Blue Raspberry-flavored vodka
2 parts sour
1 part tonic
Combine and serve over ice. Simple and refreshing.
Layered Patriotic Punch
Sobe Pina Colada
Gatorade Fruit Punch
G2 Gatorade Blueberry-Pomegranate
1 Part Whipped Cream Vodka
Start by filling glasses to the brim with ice then pour the drink with the highest sugar content into the cups (Sobe Pina Colada) and fill them approximately one third full. For the second layer pour the second drink with the lower sugar content slowly (Gatorade Fruit Punch) through the ice to fill approximately the second third of the glasses. Finish with the sugar-free drink (G2 Gatorade Blueberry-Pomegranate) and top each glass with vodka. The vodka will sit on top of the creation. Be careful, this drink can be very strong!

At The Beach: Will Adler’s Water World
The best photos always come from the inside. Will Adler is a 30 year old West Coast photographer known for his unique take on the surf world. Adler’s laid back, light infused images – of women surfers, as often as men – allude to the real spirit and atmosphere of place as much as the action of the sport. They’ve earned him a cult following in both surfing and photography circles. These shots were taken in Tahiti, Mexico, Hawaii, California, and the East Coast for himself and for magazines like Juxtapoz, Neon, Surfer, WAX, and The New Yorker. The magazine world is where I met James Danziger. We worked together at Vanity Fair when we both had very different lives. Danziger now runs of the premiere photo galleries in the country. This exhibit is the perfect summer-in-the-city escape, maybe the next best thing to being on the beach or in the water yourself. At Danziger Gallery through July 31.

At The Beach: Calvin Seibert’s Summer Sand Castles
Growing up in Colorado, Calvin Seibert spent a lot of time at construction sites. Back then, he was thousands of miles away from an ocean, but that didn’t stop him from building castles out of the massive mounds of sand. I first met him YEARS ago (we’re talking 80s) when he was assisting my friend, artist Rodney Alan Greenblat. We recently reconnected and I found out among other things, he’s been making these crazy structures out of sand. His castles are not so much castles but more the brutalist structures of his architectural inspirations like Paul Rudolph, Gottfried Bohm and Giovanni Michelucci.
“I always had an affinity for architecture which I attribute to growing up in a neighborhood and town that was constantly under construction. As I was becoming more aware of the architecture in the wider world, Brutalism was one of the styles of the moment.”
Calvin’s tool kit? A 5-gallon pail to tote water and sand, a plastic placemat for leveling surfaces and another little piece of plastic for getting those sharp edges. That’s it. But they key is making sure the texture of the sand is just right. Too dry; weak and crumbly. Too wet; hard to shape.
“I walk to Penn Station, take the train out to Jones Beach, I walk for 40 minutes so I’m so far out I can build a castle and have it be there several days later because no one’s bothered it.”
He spends the entire day and would go longer but the light goes and then so does Calvin, leaving his follies to the elements. All that’s left are these photos and maybe a little sun kissed glow on Calvin’s happy face.
