Russian artist Maria Ionova-Gribina lovingly photographs the dead animals she finds by the side of the road in gorgeous beds of flowers, giving them a fabulous sendoff to the afterlife. We should all have such lovely goodbyes.

Says Maria these photographs:

I found these dead animals during bicycle rides to the sea in the summer. I wanted to find a way to save them for world of art. They were so unprotected… One or two days more and they would be eaten by worms. I remembered my childhood. When I with my brother found a dead mole, bird or bug we buried them on the border of a forest. And we decorated the grave with flowers and stones. Why we did it that way? Probably it was a children’s curiosity, our first studies of mortality. In this project I work with my childhood memories and with the subject of life and death. All animals died naturally or after accidents with cars. The flowers were gathered near dead animals and in my garden.

“At the time, we were broke, living in a sixth-floor walk-up in crack-infested Alphabet City. It had that inverse kind of glamour that people bedazzle as ‘bohemian’: drug dealers, addicts, hookers, and even a psychotic murderer. The fag-end of the American dream. We loved almost every minute of it!

There was a lone club, the Pyramid, on Avenue A and 7th Street – the very edge of civilization. There was something about the place. It pulled people in. Fabulous drag artistes. Hapi Phace. Tabboo. Faye Runway. Sister Dimension. Lypsinka. And occasionally, from Atlanta, the not-yet-famous RuPaul and Lady Bunny. Todd Haynes debuted his notorious Karen Carpenter film there. Victor Weaver and Trey Speegle hosted “Straight to Hell” strip parties on Sunday nights. And on hand almost every night was Nelson Sullivan, a gentleman charmer with the most languid southern drawl and a fag in his mouth, videotaping everyone and everything.

That camera was like a pirate’s parrot, permanently perched on his shoulder. He said that one day he was going to edit his thousands of hours of material into a public access cable show. But on July 4, 1989, he dropped dead of a heart attack. Nelson’s death was our call to action. We didn’t really know what public access was, but we soon learned. Cable companies had to make a couple of channels available for local community access. In other words, people could make their own shows and get them on TV. Simple as that. They could be about whatever they wanted them to be. There was no editorial screening process. Slots were assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Manhattan’s public access channels presented a glittering seam of talent. Willa Sands – possibly tipsy – hosting Happy Hour. John Wallowitch – no less tipsy – banging out “Sing Along in Lithuanian” on the piano and knocking back Long Island Iced Teas. He was friends with Warhol, reportedly. Mrs Mouth, who painted a face on her upside-down chin then talked about picking her nose. And, for the adults, Voyeur Vision, where viewers could call in and talk to comely Lynn lying on a bed, touching herself where they requested. And veteran fixture Robin Byrd, in her trademark crocheted bikini, introducing strippers.

It was pure Videodrome, but without the inconvenience of sprouting a video vagina. We figured there was no reason we couldn’t make a public access show, so we came up with the idea of Flaunt It! TV, a talk show taped once a week at New York’s Limelight nightclub, and hosted by us. Quentin Crisp, Kate O’Toole, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Michelangelo Signorile, Michael Musto, and a monosyllabic Stephen Saban were some of the long-suffering guests on the short-lived show. It wasn’t exactly ratings gold. It ran for four episodes before we collapsed in exhaustion, followed by a prolonged period of deep depression. Not that failure ever stopped us. In the long run it was our fuel.”

Newsflash: beauty is a social construction. I mean, duh. But if you’re a visual person like me, seeing it mapped out on a human face across the world is much more powerful than nodding off atop Sociology 101. Journalist Esther Honig sent a photo of her face as a blank canvas to artists in 27 countries and asked them to make her look beautiful. The results were strikingly different, with artists altering her eyebrows, cheekbones, lips, and skin tone.  It’s another lesson in mind over matter, beauty in the eye of the beholder, skin-deep beauty as intertwined with our culture, and so on and so forth! Arguably the biggest outlier is from the USA, and one word comes to mind: SEVERE. Are these artists working for Mattel?

Amy Adams was flying Delta first class fr0m Detroit to LA and noticed a bunch of servicemen in uniform sitting in coach. She then turned over her ticket to one of them because “it was something she always wanted to do and decided to finally do it.” She said she didn’t do it for attention for herself, but for attention for the troops. Amy was born on a base in Italy and raised on a base in Colorado. Then she took it a step further and posed for selfies with her new coach seatmates. Effin’ love her.

You guys, I got to co-host the NYC Pride Rally with the one and only Demi Lovato! You never know how these things are gonna turn out when you meet people you love, but as I knew in my head, we became fast friends for the night. She was hilarious, adorable and real, just what I had hoped. She also said how much she loves RuPaul’s Drag Race and wants to guest judge for season 7! Can’t wait to see her bring NYC to it’s knees Sunday night when she performs at the Dance on the Pier. I now love her even more if that was possible.

Bobby Womack, whose work spanned 6 decades of music has died at age 70. Womack was nicknamed the Preacher for his church-trained voice and it made him much more popular in England than here in the US. The pop stars of the day really considered him to be rock royalty, his many admirers including Keith Richards, Rod Stewart and Stevie Wonder. Womack had his first hit in 1964 when he wrote the song, “It’s All Over Now,” and recorded it with his group, the Valentinos. A new British band, called the Rolling Stones, then said that they wanted to record it and became their first number 1 single in the UK and their first international hit, while the Valentinos’ version disappeared. Womack later said;

“I was very upset about it. It was like, ‘They stole my song.’ I stopped being upset when we got our first royalty check. That changed everything.”

He was supposedly finically secure for the rest of his life from the royalties of that song alone. Many of his songs were recorded by others over the years, and not without trying, but he never really made it big like so many stars who revered him. In 2009 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hip-hop stars frequently sampled the soul music of his era, but Mr. Womack refused most all requests to use his recordings in their work. Despite his well-publicized marital problems and struggles with drugs and alcohol, he said he remained a gospel singer at heart.

“Me being from the old school, I would not say ‘bitch’ on a record. I couldn’t face my mother if I did.”

The Spring collections for men just wrapped up in Milan and there were plenty of RTW lines with wearable men’s clothing. (I covet the Belstaff jacket above with vintage-esque patches and the navy Canali suit) But how fun is looking at wearable? The borderline ridiculous (however beautiful or well-constructed) are always worth a peek. Here are my picks for MOST MOST. Some of wackiness comes from the styling, oddball casting and koo-koo hair but these lines do share several trends: multi-layering, pattern on pattern, brights, short pants and exposing what would normally be covered. Have fun. Yes, WTF is right.
