NSFW! UK’s Channel Four goes deep into the tunnels under Bucharest to explore a world populated by drug addicts, thieves, runaways, and all manner of society’e cast-offs. Wait. Did I say tunnels? I mean panic-inducing crawlspaces and narrow cravasses and tiny, interconnected burrows. They’re presided over by a man who calls himself Bruce Lee, who takes in these outsiders, provides them with drugs and food and kittens, and gives them a sense of family many of them have never had before. It would be heartwarming if it wasn’t all so completely terrifying and post-apocalyptic… and if every scene didn’t contain half a dozen filthy drug addicts shooting up in the background and then either nodding off or ODing. Bruce, himself, comes off as alternately benevolent, menacing, idiotic, and a figure to be pitied. It always fascinates me how these subcultures can be founded on such good intentions, but because everyone involved is so inherently broken, it all just immediately devolves into chaos. There but for the grace of God, and all that.
