2015 was chuck full with amazing things. Beyond Miss Universe becoming relevant again, Kirsten Dunst swept back into our hearts (to collect all the TV trophies) on FX’s “Fargo,” as indie films like “Tangerine” and big blockbusters like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” both impacted the shift in the storytelling paradigm in their own ways. Here’s my favorite things for #WOWBestof2015:
1) KIRSTEN DUNST IN “FARGO”
I’ve talked about her A LOT, but Peggy Blumquist was easily the most exciting character – not just female protagonist – to come out of primetime television this (decade) year. Kirsten Dunst sparkles and shows us her full range (Bring It On, Virgin Suicides, etc.) as the nutty beautician from Luverne, Minnesota gon’ Bonnie and no Clyde badass. Give her all the awards!
2) CARLY RAE’S JEPSEN’S “EMOTION”
At the end of 2012, it would’ve been easy to write Jepsen off as a one-hit-wonder – largely because of a lil smash single “Call Me Maybe.” I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but after teaming up with Blood Orange, Carly Rae came back this year delivering the most effervescent pure pop album I’ve heard this year. Don’t believe me? Get in your car after sunset and listen to the whole album from start to finish and drive around the Hollywood Hills and don’t tell me you won’t fall in love with your ears.
3) POODLE TOTE BY WACKY WACKO
Seth Boggart told me that this illustration was based off a ginormous-sized poodle sculpture he saw in Baltimore when he visited there last year. That story alone had me fork over the forty bucks to what has now become my game-changer weekend bag. No matter where I go, I get a compliment. Get yours here.
4) BKR BOTTLE
These lux (cute AF) glass water bottles will seriously change the way you get your eight-glasses-of-water-a-day. Plus, they come in every color to match any thirsty girl’s mood.
5) FILOFAX PLANNER
Ever wanted to feel like Rose McGowan in “Jawbreaker?” Me too. These tiny ass planners will get your shit together quick, while remaining chic. I recommend nude to match your newfound transparency to organization.
6) THIS PICTURE
It’s hard to believe that Solange got married this year, but like, she wins (instagram) wedding portraits.
7) TANGERINE
This dramedy shot entirely on iPhones about two trans women turning tricks is epic, heartwarming, and heartbreaking. It’s also streaming on Netflix.
8) POE AND FINN
My force was awoken the moment these two were gay for outer space for one another. I ship them so hard and I’m praying to the JJ Abrams’ gods that we get a make-out scene in Episode 8.
9) BOOBIE PLANTERS
I don’t actually have one of these, but like, I really want one. And my friend has one and whenever I go over I sorta stare at it for a long period of time. They’re also sold at the super cool Otherwild in Echo Park. You can get yours here.
10) GOOD TWIN CO CARDS
Katie Wilson makes timeless cards for every occasion. With impeccable design and color theory, be sure to stalk up for all your Secret Santas. Get yours here.
11) GLITTER TREES FROM TRADER JOE’S
These teeny little evergreens (sprinkled with literal glitter) will get you in the festive mood this holigay season. And at four dollars are tree, they won’t burn a whole in your gift-giving wallet!
12) CASEY JANE ELLISON
Painfully funny and so smart. I went from fangirl to friend (kind of). I think she followed me back on Twitter?
13) LITTLE PINE
This all vegan rezzie by the OG new age goddess Moby is affordable, non-pretentious, and so delicious. You have to try the “egg” salad sandwich.
14) BAGGU BAGS
Want to have a re-useable fold-up bag that looks like something Mindy Kaling would rock at Whole Foods?! Well now you can. These little babies come in at like, six bucks a pop, and will store all your produce on your walks home from Trader Joe’s.
15) TRANSPARENT SEASON 2
Maybe it’s because I was a background actress on an episode:
Or because it’s just a solid, well-written, deeply profound, prolific, and moving, must-tell story, you have to (binge) watch this sophomore season by Jill Soloway. To close out the year, this was the last thing I glued my eyes to my macbook for (since finishing Fargo) and you should too!
