Who even knew this existed? In this failed sitcom pilot for CBS, larger-than-life Broadway legend Ethel Merman plays a musical comedy star (natch) who dumps her orphaned grandson on his bachelor uncle (played by Austin Pendleton). Ethel was very ETHEL, of course – all booming schtick and exuberant mugging – but the script was poor, and CBS declined to include it in their fall season. Watching it now is BLISS, if you love the big and brassy Ethel Merman as much as I do – or absolute HELL if you find her shrill and annoying as, I guess, 99% of the earth’s population does. Give it a shot, then move on to some of her disco hits (which I’ve included below).
