A Scottish man was arrested and fined $675 after allegedly trying to opening the plane door during a flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam. James Gray has been given a five-year ban from flying with KLM after confusing the bathroom door with the exit door.

“The crew told me to stay in my seat and I was to be arrested when the plane landed. I tried to explain it was a simple mistake. It was a misunderstanding. The police came and arrested me. They weren’t too friendly. They weren’t too friendly.”

As soon as the flight landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Gray was placed in a detention center overnight. He didn’t realize he was also banned from the airline until he attempted to fly back home and staff refused to let him get on the plane.

“I was charged and fined $675. I only had (€750) with me so I had to borrow money for the rest of the stay over there.”

Hello?! It’s 2015, how does someone flying to Amsterdam NOT have at least one credit card? When asked about the alleged door opening, Gray said he wouldn’t open a plane door on purpose and claims he only touched the handle.

“I realise the danger of that sort of thing.”

OMG. Really? Opening a plane door while it’s flying –yeah, may be dangerous. But it is worth noting that it’s not actually possible to open an aircraft door during a flight due to cabin pressure. So, even if he did really try to open the door, it would have been almost impossible for him to shift it or cause any real damage. Even still, he sounds like maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
