Sometimes problematic One Direction band member Liam Payne announced via Twitter yesterday that he will be on the cover of popular LGBT magazine Attitude, and shared a teaser of the two special edition covers. The headlines reads “World Exclusive: Liam Payne on His Wild Nights, Gay Rights, and Why Homophobia Is a Thing of the Past.” This is notable for three reasons. The first is that this is will mark the first gay press shoot anyone from One Direction has ever done. HURRAY! The second is that Liam’s management team is obviously doing a vigorous tap-dance to make us forget that Liam, himself, has been accused of homophobia in the past (once when he tweeted his support of virulently anti-gay Duck Dynasty hate monger Willie Robertson and then again a couple weeks ago when he made a seemingly offhand comment at a recent One Direction gig, telling the crowd: “This is my favorite song off the last album, and it is about trying to find that number one woman of your life, which none of you can relate to, ’cause most of you are girls. Except for the boys in here, you know what I’m talking about.” – which I ain’t even mad about tbh). The last thing to note about this cover (and the most interesting in my mind) is that Liam is most likely laying the foundation for a solo career, and has decided that the Nick Jonas route to fame i.e. pandering to the gay community, is the way to go. I like that. I like the idea that all future male stars must appear shirtless at gay clubs and grope themselves in magazine shoots to have any measure of success. Here what, Liam: I’m willing to forget about the Duck Dynasty stuff if you make it a habit of thrusting your bulge into every photographer’s lens you happen upon. And you can be as big a star as you want. Deal?
