Every year the world stops spinning for a few days in April as celebrities descend upon the Coachella Valley for the annual music festival there. The media is routinely whipped into a feeding frenzy as C-list stars wear super-expensive gauzy outfits and jam out with plebes in the roasting desert sun. Everybody who is anybody is there, of course, from Bono to Phoebe Price – but did you know that NOW THEY’RE GETTING PAID TO ATTEND? Kaplow. *Mind blown* Reports the New York Daily News:
The Coachella music festival in California kicks off Friday, and while tickets are selling for hundreds of dollars online, Confidenti@l has learned how much celebs are being paid to attend the event. Lea Michele will earn a cool $20,000 from Lacoste to wear its clothes while she rocks out to headliners OutKast, Muse and Arcade Fire, while Vanessa Hudgens is being paid $15,000 by McDonald’s to hit the festival.
Some stars are still looking for companies to pony up the cash in exchange for plugging their products. We hear Aaron Paul is asking for $15,000 and at least 2 VIP passes, while Kate Bosworth is demanding double that. Joe Jonas is seeking somewhere under $20,000, while British fashion blogger Louise Roe wants $5,000 and three tickets. Coachella runs this coming weekend and April 18-20.
I don’t normally begrudge celebs for picking up a few extra bucks and striking while the celebrity iron is hot – a supermarket opening here, a nightclub appearance there – but somehow this seems slightly apocalyptic. I mean, I never for a second thought they actually PAID to go to Coachella – I figured there was a VIP entrance somewhere in back with Kenny Kenny letting in THE RIGHT PEOPLE – but this seems rather BEYOND THE PALE. Paying celebrities to receive the perks they get anyway seems ridiculous. Like, instead of just giving them swag, we’re now PAYING them to take it? “I wanted to give you this EMERALD, but just to make sure you take it, I’m paying you A MILLION DOLLARS.” Good grief. We really are moving towards Idiocracy, aren’t we?
