This past week, Dan Savage’s Hump Festival rolled through LA and my partner in crime John Polly and I went to see it. It’s sort of unusual to watch sex on screen in a movie theater next to your close friend (it’s 2015, not 1985) – and honestly it was lovely. Friends who porn together, stay together, right?
The Hump Festival presents a collection of (somewhat) pornographic short films by amateurs of all kinds. Anyone can submit. The films depict people of broad genders, sexual orientations, races, and body types. Some are arty, some are filthy, some have no nudity at all but treat suggestive subjects. There’s something for everyone, but as Dan Savage explained in his intro, this also means that you will see movies you wouldn’t select in the privacy of your own home. And that’s the genius. The best part about the whole experience is that they force you to put away your phone and threaten to confiscate and destroy it if you don’t comply. You have to, um, actually BE THERE.
I especially loved one called Bedtime Stories that retold the classic Goldilocks and the 3 Bears tale as a 4 way among burly guys. This Goldilocks has a thick beard, loves fellatio, and wears an adorable blond wig. I also loved Glory Hole, a touching tale of a long term gay marriage that started at…a glory hole. If men aren’t your thing, Cyclust tells the story of two women who meet while biking then end up, well, not biking. It’s pretty hot if I say so myself!
We at WOW love everything real and everything realness…and this festival delivers on both. Check it out through the year in a city near you.
