In in interview with People magazine, the Oscar winner talks for the first time about his sexuality:
“I don’t like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man. All the people close to me have known for years who I am… it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was.”
At 82, it had to different for a man of his generation. The son of noted actor-comedian Mickey Katz, Grey remembers:
“…hearing the grownups talk in the next room, my mother included, talking derisively about ‘fairies’ and men being dragged off to jail and even worse for being who they were.”
Joel is my neighbor in the far West Village. I see him on the street all the time, we’ve exchange pleasantries and at his most recent photography show, he signed his giant photo book Billboards for me. I say, good for you, sir! Even at 82, I’ll bet this feels pretty great. Read the full interview here.
