In a bizarre/brilliant marketing ploy parents everywhere can get behind, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are tricking children into going to bed before midnight this New Year’s Eve. In a new three-minute short, King Julien — the ring-tailed lemur who stars in All Hail King Julien, the original series that’s a spinoff of the studio’s Madagascar franchise — hosts a musical, kid-friendly countdown to midnight. The on-demand clip can be played whenever parents feel it’s necessary. 34% of parents in the U.S. admit to starting the New Year’s Eve countdown early to trick their kids into thinking its midnight, according to a survey conducted by Netflix. The NYE countdown clip will be available in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and France. “All Hail King Julien,” launched Dec. 19 with 5 episodes and new ones will be available next year. I think I just might play this at 8 o’clock and trick myself into going to bed early.
