Here are 3 unrelated art events in NYC this weekend and I’m lumping them altogether. Everyone always complains that art is for the elite, but this proves the naysayers a little bit wrong, right? If you’re in New York City, get out and see some stuff… or don’t.
DUMBO Arts Festival
It’s the largest free art event in New York City with over 100 open studios, 50 galleries, and a bunch of performances and projects in between York Street and the waterfront in DUMBO. The festival’s main attraction will be a projection on the Manhattan Bridge. Language programmer Daniel Temkin collaborated with photographer Rony Maltz using the bridge as a backdrop for an installation called Borges: The Complete Works, which compiles every single word written by the Argentine short-story writer Jorge Luis Borges, 135,000 characters in total, and puts it in a word search. You can view the digital board with the letters and circle words they find which are then projected onto the bridge. Not sure how that works exactly –and it seems a bit like Scrabble in 3D, but no judgement. It’s free, after all.
The Affordable Art Fair
It is just what it sounds like, an art fair that’s affordable and my experience is that the art is usually just that – fair. This year it features 48 exhibitors, mostly from the U.S. and U.K., with a wide range of artworks for sale between $100 and $10,000. Tickets are $15 online or $20 in person for a one day pass.
