Conceptual appropriation artist Richard Prince was kicked off Instagram this year for posting a naked pic of Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby and then reinstated. Page Six says he has been showing, and selling, his latest, Instagram-inspired work at the Madison Avenue branch of Gagosian Gallery. His 48 X 56″ inkjet prints from celebrities Instagram feeds — with his comments underneath that are sometimes just emojis — have been on display just for VIPs in a private viewing area. Supposedly the works are pics of Pam Anderson and Kate Moss, among others and selling for up to $100,000. No exhibit has been announced, so far. It seems unlikely that famous folks would file a lawsuit but if they do, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time. I think if I was one of the celebs he “appropriated” I would just ask him for a signed print, rather than sue. After all, his entire career is based on annexing the work of others.
