OMOTE: Electronic Makeup for the Future!

“OMOTE” is an art installation of “living makeup” by producer Nobumichi Asai featuring “real-time face tracking and projection mapping.” Essentially, it’s a digital makeover that projects various “looks” onto a model’s face and contorts almost seamlessly as she moves her head. The potential real life application of this would mean that the green screens and awkward motion-capture suits filmmakers use today may soon be replaced by something much more versatile (and awe-inspiring). Eventually, of course, we’ll all just pick our faces for the day, spray on our clothes, and hoverboard to work. VIVA LA FUTURE!

OMOTE / REAL-TIME FACE TRACKING & PROJECTION MAPPING. from something wonderful on Vimeo.

Judging by the video, there’s an initial scanning stage – in which presumably the contours of the model’s face are mapped – and then the graphics are overlaid and manipulated in real-time to follow.

It’s not clear how much movement the system could handle – for instance, if it could be used even if the model was walking around a stage rather than seated – but it’s an incredibly impressive demonstration all the same. (via Slash Gear)

A live installation is scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan on August 28th.
